basic beanie & scarf

My husband was doing work experience with a surveyor, so he was outside in the freezing cold all day coming home unable to feel his ears. I got to work (almost) straight away on what was a very simple and effective beanie.

I found a pattern here and adapted it considerably. Then it was far too small, so before I stitched the seams I knitted an extension patch. I'd started with 86 stitches, but the patch was 14, so my adapted pattern says 100 stitches.

My Adapted Pattern:

3.75 needles (regular, not circular or double pointed)
I used Paton's big baby 8 ply, 60% Acrylic 40% Nylon. It it nice and soft. The grey stripes were from a scrap of some old acrylic yarn that was stratchy and gross.

Cast on 100 stitches.

K1, P1 rib for about an inch.
Stocking stitch – knit first on RIGHT side, then purl etc. for about 8 inches

Decrease Row 1 (Right side): Decrease down to 86 stitches – so k2tog about 1 in 7.
Row 2: Purl.
Decrease Row 3: *K3, k2tog, k2tog; repeat from * knit last stitch(es).
Row 4: Purl.
Decrease Row 5: *K2, k2tog, k2tog; repeat from * knit last stitch(es).
Row 6: Purl.
Decrease Row 7: *K2tog, repeat from * knit last stitch(es).
Rows 8 and 9: Repeat Rows 6 and 7

Cut yarn, leaving a long tail. Thread tail through remaining stitches and remove stitches from needle. Pull to gather and close top opening. Sew side edges together for back seam. Weave tails in edges.

Scarf:
The same yarn. Many many cables - he had asked for a cricket vest pattern. Never again.
